History of Miss America Prelims in Portsmouth!
The Miss Shawnee & Miss Portsmouth Scholarship Program was re-established in Portsmouth, Ohio as an official Miss America Preliminary in October 2013. Miss Shawnee was named after the area’s Shawnee Indian heritage. Miss Portsmouth was named after city location.
The Miss Shawnee & Miss Portsmouth Scholarship Program was previously named the Miss Portsmouth Scholarship Program which was established in 1958. The Miss Portsmouth Scholarship Program was held for 51 consecutive years until 2009 except for 3 years early on in the history of the pageant. During the 1960's and 1970's, the competition was sponsored by the local Jaycees and then by the Portsmouth Convention and Visitors Bureau. Since the mid 1980's different individuals have been in charge of the program. The Miss Portsmouth Scholarship Program produced titleholders under a variety of names: Miss Portsmouth, Miss Scioto Valley, Miss Southland Ohio, Miss Southern Ohio and Miss Shawnee State.
